Columbus Catfish Baseball in Columbus Ga
The Columbus Catfish played in Golden Park from 2006 – 2008 as a class A minor league baseball team with the South Atlantic league. The Columbus Catfish were associated with the Tampa Bay Rays. Golden Park is located on the Chattahoochee River on the west side of Columbus Georgia and the name Catfish came from the fish commonly caught in the River.
In 2007 the Catfish were the South Atlantic League Champs! Columbus continued to enjoy the team thru the 2008 season with the team moving to Bowling Green Ky in 2009.
Columbus has not replaced the team so far. Golden Park is used primarily for softball now as this is a big tradition in the Columbus Georgia area and at one time was the site of Softball in the 1996 Olympics.
Over the years Columbus has hosted several Class A and Double A teams and hopefully they will host a team similar to the Columbus Catfish in the future!!
The river behind Golden Park will soon be active with the longest urban whitewater course in the world as whitewater rafting in Columbus Georgia becomes a huge sport!!!
We are only 1.5 hours from Atlanta home of the Atlanta Braves.. It would be nice in the future to have a minor league team in the Braves organization.
The Army Base is a big supporter of the teams that land in Columbus. As one of the largest military bases in the world it is nice to have professional sports close by!!
Hopefully baseball will be back in Columbus Georgia Soon! We love some baseball in this area. In the mean time we will just have to enjoy our very successful little league teams!!
